Working Out the Truth

I cannot recall the last time I was in a gym. I think I had a brief bout of fancying myself a runner for a month or two in college, but other than that, I’m a girl who mostly enjoys going for walks as exercise.

Do I want to be up two hours before my breakfast shift at the diner starts? No. But this is when Ivan mentioned he prefers to work out, so here I am in what I hope looks like gym attire, but is really just pink sweatpants and a white t-shirt.

I’m sure I stand out when I check in at the front desk with the guest pass Lisa gave me.

Did I think my plan through? Not really, or not enough. If Ivan isn’t here, then I just wasted Lisa’s guest pass. I didn’t get the man’s last name, either. There might be more than one Ivan. Plus, he might want to be left alone, if he even is here. He comes here before dawn so he can get a good workout in. Judging by the thickness of his neck, I’m guessing he doesn’t prefer to be interrupted during his gym time.

Still, I have to know. Why I don’t just butt out and stick to cupcakes and waitressing is beyond me. But I don’t like to see my friend fleeced, which, if she didn’t murder Jared, she doesn’t deserve.

I don’t expect to see Ivan on the treadmills, nor hanging around the yoga studio. The gym is huge, and despite the early hour, there are quite a few people on the machines, though it isn’t anywhere near as packed as it was when I visited this gym before.

My visions of the insides of gyms range from the leotard-clad eighties movies all the way to muscle-bound weightlifters who throw the weights down and shout their aggressive glee with a guttural growl.

Fortunately, this is nothing like that. Most people in here are focused on their workouts with earbuds on and determination on their faces.

Including Ivan, whom I spot in the corner by the… I’m not sure exactly what that contraption is. It looks like a tall jungle gym for weightlifters. I am not touching that. Not a great idea to have a clumsy moment near that thing.

I’m careful with my steps, making sure I don’t trip over anything or anyone as I make my way to Ivan. He doesn’t see me at first; his focus is solely on his reflection. I have no idea how many pounds Ivan is curling, but it looks heavy enough that I make sure I don’t interrupt his reps.

That’s right. I know the word “reps”.

Ivan’s tank top is tight and shredded on both sides, exposing his barreled ribcage in case… in case his stomach needs proper ventilation?

When he finally sets down the weights, I approach him with all the politeness of a flight attendant. “Excuse me, Ivan?”

Ivan has to turn his shoulders instead of just his chin because his neck is so thick. His serious expression mutates into a smile when recognition pings on his features.
